One of the biggest questions I get from my readers is, “How to I optimize and monetize my blog?”
Well there are a ton of ways to do it. I’m not even gonna sit here and lie.
Here’s the thing. Only you know your blog and the traffic and leads it gets. There is such a thing as junk traffic and no good for nothing leads.
The growth for the sake of growth is the ideology of the cancer cell.”

You just can’t drive a ton of traffic for the sake of driving a ton of traffic!
You just can’t build a list for the sake of building a list!
There has to be a reason WHY you’re driving that traffic and building your list.
So in today’s post I’ll share some of the ways I’ll be optimizing and monetizing my blog and give you my reasons why. This will help you somewhat understand my thought process behind this stuff. There is a method to my madness ;-)
First thing you want to do is Analyze your stats. Your results. Whether it be traffic, leads, income, whatever it is you’re trying to optimize and maximize.
For the Income Press blog I’ll be looking at the traffic it’s been getting.
These stats are from my Google Analytics report from Jan – Jun 2013. These are the top ten most visited pages and posts on my blog.
We’ll start with the Junk Traffic
You’ll notice that 2 of the top ten pages are post I’ve written that’s none related to what the Income Press Blog is all about.
The Fox Log was just to show people how to use iVipid site. That site has a referral program. I get a ton of referrals just from that post.
The kale shake recipe post was more of a personal type article. It was about how I learned I have Diabetes and what I was doing to improve my health. Still I have some Amazon affiliate links in it that helps drive sales.
The traffic I get from those to posts are great, but only for the purposes of iVipid’s referral program and the Amazon links. Nothing else.
Other than that this traffic is junk. It serves no other purpose.
Do I get leads? Of course, but they’re worthless! These people come here to learn how to create their own Fox logo and for another Kale Shake Recipe. That’s it.
- They don’t want to make money online…
- They don’t want to build a blog…
- They don’t want to build a list…
- They are clueless with this thing of ours…
I don’t know if you know this or not but the bigger your list the more you pay. If they aren’t going to open up your emails, click on your links, or by your products, it’s a junk list and it’s junk traffic.
Now the Good Traffic
Now this is great traffic because this is what the Income Press is all about. I have a podcast. And most Podcasts are generally business related, so this traffic and leads are perfect.
But still something is missing. Because as of now I haven’t had anything to offer these visitors or leads that’s related to Podcasting, until now!
I recently created a web based app called The Podcast Artwork Slicer. This is an app that allows you to create custom iTunes artwork for your podcast.
Now I have something to offer these people ;-)
Here’s the plan.
I’m going to optimize and monetize these pages and posts and I’m going to eliminate some of the junk traffic and email subscribers I get. I’m going to show you exactly what I’m going to do.
Hopefully some of these ideas can help you with some of your junk traffic.
The original posts for both the Fox logo and Kale Shake tutorials have sidebar widgets which had my optin form and other stuff unrelated to what they came here for.
First thing I’m going to do is to get rid of the sidebar. Turn it into a landing page with no distractions what so ever. This will help eliminate some of the junk traffic that goes to my other posts and pages.
Remember, the rest of the blog is unrelated to them. When they land on other posts, they get confused and they leave immediately therefore increasing my bounce rates.
High bounce rates hurt your blog.
This will also help eliminate some of the junk leads it generates and help them focus more on what they actually came here for.
The Podcasting articles I’ll leave as is because they are related to the rest of the blog. However I will be monetizing them.
Now I’m going to monetize all these posts and pages to help increase some of the revenue it gets. I’ll also be doing little tricks here and there to bring in more traffic.
Monetize #1 – Adding AdSense: For the first time ever I’ll be adding AdSense to this blog. Don’t worry, it’s only to the Fox Logo post.
Since there really isn’t any other way to monetize this fox logo thing with Amazon products or other affiliate products, I’m left with AdSense. I do pretty well in AdSense just from the fox logo YouTube videos so I figure this would be a perfect place to put adsense.
I’ll be split testing the placements of the adds but for now I’ll start with a full size banner at the top and a link unit at the bottom. This will change from often until I find a good flow.
Monetize #2 – Add Above Post Banners: I call this the Kissimmee Banner. These are banners placed right above the post linking back to related products either on Amazon or my own products.
Monetize #3 – Message Board Targeting: On each and every single post I can change the message on the Message Board to target that specific post. For both the Podcasting tutorials I’ll be utilizing this section to drive traffic to my artwork slicer product.
This will not only increase super targeted traffic to my artwork slicer product, but also increase sales just because it’s super targeted traffic.
Monetize #4 – Products Page: I’m going to add a products page for some of my current and future products and services, (this is more for the relevant traffic). I’ve been getting more and more emails of people asking me if I have any courses or programs.
As of right now I don’t have any open courses but I will be releasing some soon.
Other than that I really don’t have any programs or courses of any kind that’s currently open. All the coaching programs I have are closed for the simple fact that many of them are outdated.
I am however currently writing a new eBook on how the Income Press blog made $48,008.28 in it’s first full year. This will also be featured on Kindle.
Little Traffic getting tricks ;-)
I’ve been split testing different ways to increase traffic and engagements to not only these four articles, but to my entire blog and I think I found something that’s been working a bit for me.
Traffic getting trick 1: The Social Share widget. I had my programmer code a little snippet that allows me to insert a social share widget anywhere I want in in my post.
[share]Share this post if you think this snippet is cool ;-)[/share]
I can even change the text inside it like this:
[share]Man this is way to cool! Now share this post ;-)[/share]
Ever since I started using this snippet, I’ve seen an increase in likes, shares, and traffic to my posts.
Traffic getting trick 2: This is an old one but I just recently started using it. It’s the Click to Tweet tool. It’s a site that generates the link for you. This is the way I use it.
“Here’s how to Optimize and Monetize your Blog: << click here to tweet this.”
When you click on that link it’ll automatically generate the text and link for you to tweet. Pretty clever huh!
This little traffic getting trick has increase traffic to many of my posts. I just can’t believe I didn’t discover it sooner.
These two little traffic getting tricks aren’t really that huge, but every bit helps. It increases engagement and the word of mouth aspect of marketing. Nothing is better than Word of Mouth.
Those are my plans
After months of analyzing my traffic and leads, where they were coming from and the pages visited, I realized that much of this traffic and the leads I was getting could’ve been controlled.
I was simply just to damn lazy to do anything about it. It was literally wasted traffic and leads more than junk traffic and leads. I dropped the ball on this opportunity a long time ago.
Now that I’ve created a plan of action it’s time to implement. Put it to work.
This is just an Experiment
I’m not trying to flood this blog with AdSense or turn this into some kind of Selling like a mad man type of blog. I’m just doing a little experimentation here. I’m trying to make the most out of that junk traffic.
When you start getting a steady flow of traffic to your blog, you’ll notice that a big portion of it is junk traffic, and the same goes for when you’re building your list.
Most of us don’t do shit with this junk traffic. I’m so guilty of this. For years I’ve neglected this junk traffic. I just let it go cause I thought it didn’t matter.
I’m trying to figure out a way to make it work. Turn that junk traffic into useful traffic. Junk traffic that will convert into money. That’s what this whole thing is about right?
We’re here to make a living. We’re here to support our families. Nothing wrong with that!
Do you have junk traffic or junk leads?
If you’re already getting some kind of traffic, check your Analytics to see what kind of traffic it is. Try some of these ideas to see if you can increase engagement, traffic, leads, and income.
Let me know in the comments below which ones or if all you’re planning on using. Type in the link to your post or page so that I can check it out and maybe I can give you some ideas ;-)
