For the past few years I been wanting to write a book.
Not one of those that you print on 48hourbooks.com. Anyone can do that. But a real book. Like the ones you find on Barnes and Nobles.
I want one that’s actually published and distributed all over the country and even the world.
At the beginning of the year I set a few goals for myself.
Some going great, others not so great, and a few projects that started out of the blue which worked out very well.
One of those goals was to start and finish my book. Well so far I’ve only got like a quarter of it written. Don’t really know why but it’s just not taking off like I’d wanted it to.
I gave myself a year to do it and by now I should be half way through. To be honest, the last time I worked on it was 2 months ago.
I don’t know, maybe the passions not there, or I’m just not that into it, or whatever.
But something sparked inside of me last week…
Last week I read a post by Pat Flynn, talking about his plans to get started on his book. Not only that, but Pat’s also getting into the KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing) arena.
This totally ignited this passion I have inside me for writing and getting into publishing. Thank you Pat ;-)
Ideas started flowing, notepads started filling up, I couldn’t stop. Very stoked and excited about this!
Right then and there I made a conscious decision to get off my ass and get this dang thing started.
Well as I said earlier, I been wanting to publish a real book. Well that’s not working out so great as you can see.
After doing some research, I found that it’s not that easy to get a book out there, at least the way I want to.
You got to deal with things like…
- getting a publisher
- creating a book proposal
- and all kinds of ju-ju beans
You can probably tell that traditional publishing would be a real lengthy process. You gotta remember, I’m an Internet guy. I’m use to fast and quick results. Things around here run a lot faster than that.
The next option…
So this leaves me with going the Self-publishing route. Which is totally cool with me cause I would basically have full control of everything.
I’ve been looking at self-publishing and the Kindle market for a while now and I truly believe that this is the right path for me to take first in order to get a nice little book deal later.
The Kindle Experiment
I’ll be following Pat’s KDP journey and like him, I’ll be documenting everything here on my blog along the way.
I’ll breakdown everything from:
- strategies used
- mind maps
- and anything else that happens
I’m sure there will be some bumps along the way, but it’s cool. It’s all a part of the process and learning experience. Plus it wouldn’t be that much fun with out them ;-)
What Kind of Books Am I Publishing?
I really do not want to get into the whole “how to make money” type of thing. I actually want to write real stories. Fictional type stories.
I’m a big fan of short stories so those are the types of books I want to publish and eventually getting into novels.
Now I have no freaking idea how to write a proper short story, let alone a novel, so for this I’ll be looking to hire a consultant.
I want to make sure my books are top quality. I don’t wanna put out bullshit stuff. I know I need help and I’m going to get it.
Yeah, I been writing on this blog and my old blog for years, but that doesn’t make me an expert writer. It’s totally different.
To write a short story or novels, you have to be able to really tell a story. There’s plots, conflicts, settings, situations, character building, etc., and I honestly don’t know how to do that.
LOL …yeah, you might be laughing your ass off right about now but there’s no shame in it …it’s ok ;-)
I don’t know yet what topics or short stories I’ll be writing yet, but I do know what book I’ll publish first.
First Book to Publish
The first book I’ll be publishing is my famous ebook, “The Greatest Experiment Ever“.
This ebook has been downloaded over 100k times since I first released it back in 2010. It’s my most popular ebook ever. It’s been my lead magnet here on the IP blog since I first launched the blog.
I know I said I didn’t want to get into this niche, and I still don’t, but the reason why I’m doing this is to get my feet wet.
The ebooks already done and all I’ll have to is edit it and add some more stuff to it, just to make it more current and more of a real type book instead of just a report.
This will give me a chance to really get familiar with the KDP process. Plus I’m planning on creating an app that will help me automate the whole process, so the earlier I get in, the faster I can get started on the software.
To get started I’ll need to set myself a schedule in order to keep things organized as much as possible. Sort of a list of goals or accomplishments to achieve.
Steps and Schedule
Week 1 – Study HARD: All I’m going to do for the first week is study my ass off. The first thing I need to do is get real familiar with the KDP platform. I need to learn everything I can about it.
How it works, terms of service, how to get my book from my iMac to KDP, from KDP to the customer, and all the ins and outs.
Week 2 – Brainstorm, Mind Maps, & Outsourcing: I’ll hit my big huge whiteboard and just start brainstorming and mind mapping everything out. Here I’ll figure out exactly what I want to write about, the funnel, outsourcing, etc.
Week 3 – Prepping: Here I’ll be prepping and getting the book Kindle and Amazon ready. It’ll take at least a week to get the funnel ready before actually publishing it. The funnel is basically just the flow that I’ll take the reader through from my book to my blog, or optin page. I’ve yet to decide where, but that will be taking care of in week 2.
Week 4 – Publishing: If all goes to plan, I’ll be publishing my first book, The Greatest Experiment Ever, at the beginning of the week. I’ll be doing a lot of analyzing and gathering data for the rest of the week. Should be loads of fun ;-)
That’s all for now
As I said before, I’ll be documenting every step of the way.
I have a 12 week plan and in the next stage, I’ll be working on the short story books. I’ll tell you more about that later. For now I just want to focus hard on the first 4 weeks.
I hope you can join me in this experiment. It’ll be loads of fun and it’s a great way to venture in to something new. Something outside of this “How to make money” thing.
This is going to sound like a broken record, but there’s so many ways to earn a nice passive income other than the I.M. niche. And that’s what I’m trying to show here on the Income Press blog.
Will this work? Who the hell knows…
But one thing I can’t tell you for sure is, if we never try, we will never, EVER know if it truly does work.
I’m just saying….
Let me know your thoughts and if you plan to join me in this experiment. It’ll be cool to help each other out with out books when they get published ;-)
