The Kale Shake Experiment

best-kale-shake-recipeToday I want to share with you my Kale Shake Experiment.

I started drinking this kale shake on May 19th 2012. Since then I’ve lost 15 lbs. I’m feeling better than I’ve felt in years.

When I started this experiment, I was at 212 lbs. Today I’m at a flat 197 lbs. The last time I was under 200 was back in early 2010.

Now I know this is like way off topic of what I usually write, but since this blog is about me sharing with you all of my experiences, both online and offline, I thought it be good to share this with you.

So What Brought This Experiment On?

In early April, just a few weeks before my birthday, I had went to the doctors for my annual check up.

Things didn’t look good so the Doc sent for some blood work. Weeks later I went back for the results and BOOM, got smacked dead in the face with bad news.

Turns out my bad cholesterol is way high, and the good cholesterol is way down. On top of that, I got diagnosed with Diabetes.

At that very moment, as the doctor was telling me all this, I felt my life literally turn upside down. I had no idea what to do or what to think.

The doc put me on a strict diet, which who follows right, lol. Told me I needed to lose 20 lbs within the next 45 days.

I knew it was going to be hard cause for the past few months I’ve been trying to lose weight.

I turned to my good friend Alex Malave, who’s like a fitness freak. He turned me to this video by Joe Rogan.

In this video Joe talks about this kale shake mix he drinks and how good it is for you. So I said ok, let’s try it.

The Experiment Begins

I tried Joe Rogan’s recipe, but didn’t quite like it much. I didn’t quit though, I really wanted to see this through.

I was sick and tired of how I felt.

  • Tired all time…
  • My body aching…
  • Headaches…
  • Out of shape
  • and Over weight…

I was determined to do something about it and to get this going.

I did some heavy searching. I read everything I could find, saw every video, and just started experimenting.

Everyday since May 19th, I tried something different. I took Joe Rogan’s recipe and just added different things to it, till I came up with my own recipe.

Changing My Eating Habits

I been drinking this kale shake everyday, first thing early in the morning. Basically I swapped out breakfast for the kale shake.

I’m a big eater so I drank a full glass. Since it’s thick and heavy, it fills me up pretty good.

And through out the day, I basically ate the same thing, only difference is that I cut the amount of food I consumed.

See, I use to eat till I couldn’t eat anymore. My stomach would hurt of all the food I ate.

So I cut everything down in half and ate a small snack in between meals. This was just to kill the hunger cause my body was still use to eating all that junk. By eating the snack, it calmed the craves and gave my body a chance to get use to the new diet.

I haven’t Felt This Way in Years

I’m feeling better than ever …I’m losing weight, my body doesn’t ache anymore, my headaches are gone, I don’t feel tired anymore, I’m staying awake all day. Just all around feeling great.

A week ago I started walking around the neighborhood because I was so full of energy that I just couldn’t sit still, lol.

Now my son and I look forward to walking every day in the afternoon ;-)

My Secret Recipe

This recipe was modeled after Joe Rogan’s kale shake recipe. The only difference in my kale shake smoothie is that I added a few more goodies to the mix.

I tried adding many different things to it and I found this recipe to be the best.

Here’s a quick video showing how I make my kale shake:

(Click here to watch the Kale Shake Recipe tutorial on YouTube)

This recipe is good for 5 to 6 cups of kale shake and should only take you about 10 minutes to do.

The ingredients are:

  • 2 Large Kale Leaves (if small then use 4 small kale leaves)
  • 1 Celery Stick
  • 1 Cucumber
  • 1 Carrot
  • 1 Banana
  • 1 Pear (or apple)
  • 8 – 10 OZ of Sambazon Acai Berry Juice (you can use water)
  • half cup of Mixed Berries (or handful)
  • half inch Piece of Ginger

You’re going to need a blender that holds 5 1/2 – 6 cups minimum. I use a Hamilton Beach Blender. The one I really want is the Vitamix Professional.

  1. Chop up all your fruits and veggies into bite size pieces.
  2. Take a bunch of mixed berries, 1/2 inch piece of ginger, and chopped up cucumbers and throw them into the blender.
  3. Pour in just half of the juice.
  4. Turn on blender and mix it till it’s liquified.
  5. Take the rest of the chopped up fruits, veggies, and kale and throw them into the blender while it’s still mixing.
  6. Pour the rest of the juice into the blender.
  7. Mix well for about 5 minutes.
  8. When done, pour yourself a glass and enjoy.
  9. Please share this post if you’re finding it useful ;-)

Following Up

I plan to post frequent updates on this experiment as a way to hold myself accountable, since I did publicly share it.

Also I’m hoping with this post to motivate and inspire others who might be going through the same thing I am, to try this out. Who knows, it might just help. Can’t hurt to try.

Plus I still have to go back to the doctors for a follow up so I’ll definitely be giving you an update on that.

It’ll be interesting to see how I’ll look like or even feel like in 2 or 3 months time. I’m certainly feeling the positive difference and am going to continue on.

Why I Shared This

Today I wanted to share with you something close and  personal to me.

I know this is not my usual stuff I post here, but I think it’s important to not only share online business related stuff, but also other things that happens in my day to day life.

You see I truly believe that what happens in our day to day personal lives have a deep and profound impact in our businesses, work, or anything that we do.

So this post today I would say is so related to online business and what goes on here with the IP blog.

How you feel inside and out determines the outcome of anything and everything that you do.

I hope you enjoyed today’s post. I hope you can try this kale shake thing out, and if you do, please let me know how you like it and how it’s working out for ya.

With that said …peace and I love ya for free ;-)

Joey, thank you so much for sharing this. And you’re right, it’s way of topic but like you say, the way you feel inside reflects on your work. I’m going to try it out and will let you know. Thanks again Joey.

    • Joey K. says:

Hey Mario, let me know how you like it. The most important part is the pear, or apple if you choose. It takes the bad taste of the kale out. It actually taste like a fruit smoothy.

    This is interesting, Joey!

I’m sorry to hear about the diabetes thing, but I’m glad things are getting better now.

It’s so nice of you to share this post, and I’m sure a lot of people wanting to lose some weight will benefit from it!

    • Joey K. says:

Thanks Oni my brotha. Yeah this Diabetes shocked the hell out of me. Luckily it’s not the worst one. It’s just that for the first time in my life, I realized health was important to me.

  6. Jovana says:

Hi Joey, I loveeeeeeeee kale… am trying to become completely vegan, as I just feel it’s a healthier alternative and I feel better, physically, when I eat vegan.

I’ve been making kale chips as a snack for when I’m hungry – works as a charm!

    WELL DONE and good luck!

    • Joey K. says:

Awesome. I’m trying to do the same. Become a Vegan. So far I’ve dropped all red meats. Next is the Chicken and Fish. Little by little. Anyway, I would love to get your Kale chips recipe. If you don’t mind, email me at with the recipe. I can even make a video and give ya all the credit ;-) Thanks..

  7. Donald says:

Joey K, Good for you brother! I’m proud of you. Like Bamidele said, I’m sorry to hear about the Diabetes thing and I can vibe with you in that my family has seen the worst of that! But you my brother, you are taking ACTION! It’s cool to see how the same habits you have with your IM business, you are applying to your Lifestyle. Keep ya head up.

    • Joey K. says:

Thanks Donald. Really appreciate that. I believe that it’s real important to feel good in whatever you do. If you’re not feeling good inside, then I don’t care what you do, it will show in what you do outside. Thanks again bro…

  8. Christa Herzog says:

Oh yes, you got to lose some pounds.
What I did is surely only for a few. Almost 20 years ago I became a raw food eater. I also eat meat raw – think of beef tartar. Why raw? Because the body has a lot of work and uses energy digesting it, which if cooked is done in the cooking process. This means that when you eat the same amount and the same food cooked and I raw, you have a much higher calorie intake.
Then I read and experienced that when you give your body all nutrients it needs, you are much quicker satiated. This means protein, fat, carbs, vitamins, minerals and other micro nutrients.
If you eat more raw, the nicro nutrients stay, which are killed as soon as you heat them. That is one of the reasons why you feel better with your “morning drink”.
I would give you the advise to chew the stuff and not make a drink. The chewing takes energy, the fiber (which you throw away when juicing) fills the stomach and in a lot of what you throw away are nutrients.
Last advise: Everything you can eat raw is healthy food, no matter if you cook it or not. (For example: You can’t eat potatoes raw. Grain can’t be eaten raw.))

    • Joey K. says:

interesting. I never thought of eating raw meat. I’m actually trying to cut meat out all together and become 100% vegan.

As far as juicing, I use to do that but found I was always hungry after drinking it which is why I switched to the shake. I mix everything in there so I get all the fiber.

I’m really just wanting to cut out all meats and anything I have to cook. Thanks Christa.

      • Christa Herzog says:

Oh, okay, you use all of the ingredients in a shake. Thats good. Joey, it is proven that being a vegan is not very good. For example the Dalai Lama became a vegetarian when he came to India. He says in an interview that suddenly he turned yellow. He was operated at the Mayo clinic and they told him to eat again meat and fish. He reported to now feel much better.
All the human race always ate meat. This veganism and vegetarianism is spreading in the USA. I suspect that it is a certain industry, who want people buy and eat more of their stuff. Forget that fancy. Buy good meat, cook it as you want. Eat more vegetables and eat all kinds of natural foods. Stop with the sauces and all what is industrially produced. – You and a vegan! I cannot even imagine that.

  9. says:

    Hey Joey,
You were my wake-up call today–Thank you! I have all the symptoms you do except instead of headaches, eye problems and skin rash-Ugh.
As soon as I read this, I went to the closest health food store and came home and made the Green Shake. I added a little lemon for more alkaline effect, liquid L-carnitine for eyes and weight loss and flaxseed for omega3. Something that will help keep your extra juice fresher is to fill the container to the absolute top and then place a lid on it (that way as little air as possible gets to the juice). I’ll do the Green Drink with you. It’s something I know I should be doing but didn’t. I bet when you go back for your follow-up (if you keep doing what you are doing), you lab work will be totally turned around. So…I guess the next time I see you I owe you a Green Drink instead of a beer! The best to you and your beautiful family!

    • Joey K. says:

lol, yes, definitely green juice instead of beer ;-)

I like your flaxseed, lemon idea. For my next batch I’m gonna try it out. Definitely willing to add and try different stuff out.

In my last batch I put a half scoop of protein shake. Tasted really good. But yeah, I’m gonna keep on this. Everyday.

Thanks Sherry, and lets hook up soon ;-)

    • says:

I cut the bitterness of Kale with lemon and mint. I’ll have to try ginger, though. My recipe:
      2 cups sliced banana
2 cups freshly squeezed orange or grapefruit juice
1 1/2 cups tightly packed dinosaur or curly leaf kale
      1/4 cup lightly packed parsley
      1/4 cup lightly packed cilantro
1/4 cup lightly packed mint leaves
      1 cup frozen berries
Throw it all in a blender.

  10. Paul Warner says:

Well Joey you should have already known that you weren’t eating correctly, but the fact that you went to the doctor to find out what the
problems might be, and got this kind of report and warning from the doctor was a good thing. For myself I play a lot of tennis not only for the love of the game but I have to make sure that I am getting plenty of exercise. I also eat very carefully because the worst feeling is that you ate too much and you feel bloated. I know when I have played for a couple of hours that when I am done I feel wonderful. So Joey get plenty of exercise, eat properly and stay healthy as you have too much to live for. I have salads for dinner every night but I might try that Kale drink myself.

    • Joey K. says:

Yeah I knew I wasn’t eating riht. It’s just when you been eating that way for years, it’s hard. I use to be able to eat a horse and it was like nothing. I guess all those years of mis-treating my body caught up.

With my son now being 2 years old, he’s become more active, which in turn makes me more active cause I gotta chase him around, lol, so now I have to take better care to keep up with him.

I’m definitely noticing that I’m not as tired when I’m done playing with him. In fact he now goes through an entire nap with out me. I’m wide awake ;-)

Anyway yeah, most def I will get more exercise in. Thanks again Paul. Always good to read and have your comments here.

  11. says:

Dude. sorry to hear about the diabetes thing. But if it’s type 2 diabetes then it’s not so much of a problem. Your pancreas is still producing insulin, so it can be controlled. (My adult daughter got type 1 diabetes when she was 7 years old – her pancreas doesn’t produce any insulin and she needs to give herself injections several times a day.)

Kale is a super food! I’ve been a vegetarian for over 40 years now. I’m pretty much vegan these days. For health, aesthetics, ethics and kindness to the planet I’d recommend this diet. I’m slimmer and don’t seem to have the health problems that many people my age have, anyway! (When my doctor forced a checkup on me a couple of years back, he said that my cholesterol is the lowest he’s ever seen in a caucasian, lol.)

Anyway Joey, wishing you all the best with your new “lifestyle” :-)

      • Joey K. says:

lol, love me some carrot cake ;-) Thanks brotha. It’s a motivation for me to eat healthier more and more each day. I want to grow old with my wife and kids and still have everything working right, if ya know what I mean, lol.

  12. James says:

Sorry about the Diabetes but it happens to some. I was 70 my last birthday and working toward 71. I found out a couple of months ago I have high blood pressure and not take the pill for it and a asprin a day. I have never had a weight problem. I don’t eat right while driving trucks all the years before I had to quit because of eye problems.( I went blind in one eye.) Glad the shake is working for you. I don’t eat meat every meal and I don’t eat 3 meals a day most days and I would never eat raw meat. As for being a vegan. I don’t think I would be a good one. I am real picky about what I eat and my wife will agree.

I am 6 foot tall and with my weigh being between 135-145 for many years I don’t think I have ever had a problem and always could have added a little with still no problems. Now from doing nothing most of the time I weigh a little more but I dony think 152-159 is really a problem. But for some it is. Glad you are getting down to where you want to be.

    • Joey K. says:

WOW James, 70. Congrats. I hope to make it to that age in one peace ;-) For a 6 foot guy, 150-160 is good. I’m only 5’10” and was at 220lbs at one point. Not very good. at my height and age I should be at 170-180.

I’ll get there soon with some hard work and dedication.

Anyway, wish you all the best and may you reach 100 and many, many more.

  13. says:

Awesome to see you having so much success with this – totally excited for you! While it’s not directly related to internet marketing – exercise and eating right definitely makes it easier to get work done and be productive throughout the day in addition to all the other benefits ;)

    Thanks for sharing!

  14. says:

    Hey Joey,
Loved your post…It’s good to hear about “other things” makes you more human..Ha! Ha! Glad to hear about your weight loss, this is something I’m trying to do. I do go for walks, do some of my best thinkin while walkin.. I will try your shake sounds pretty healthy. I used to drink shakes all the time, replaced them for breakfast & lunch. Really need to get back to drinkin them..

Thanks Joey, it’s always good to hear from you….

    • Joey K. says:

Cool Janice, let me know how you like it. I love walking. It’s like my favorite thing now. And my son loves it too ;-)

  15. says:

Whatz up bro? It’s been a while, your post was very inspiring and perfect timing as I I’ve been looking for the perfect healthy shake now that I’m working home full-time. So, I immediately had my wife go out and pick up every ingredient and took ACTION. Day 2 and I’m already feeling lighter, more energized and Limitless!. I will keep you posted as my goal is to lose 30 lbs before my 37th birthday.(Oct 20) I was 203 and already down to 200 lbs. I was having the same symptoms that you were and enough is enough. My health is my wealth and “I will persist until I succeed” for my 4 kids, my wife and my life. Thanks again brotha for the life changing post!

    • Joey K. says:

man I’m so glad and happy for you bro. Keep at it. With in a week you’ll feel so different, in a good way. You’ll have so much energy too.

I’m 36 now, but ever since I turned 32, I started feeling different, as far as my body and health goes. Things I was use to eating was making me feel different in a bad way.

Just didn’t realize what it was doing to me until the doc told me.

Anyway, keep at it bro. Lets do this ;-)

  16. Allam says:

    Hi Joey,
You are very bold to share your personal life not many can dare. I was also diagnosed to be suffering from diabetes about 2 years ago and at first it was hard to accept but I have adjusted and I searched the web and I found a website by Dr Hyman a proponent of functional medicine who really helped me to regain my wellness by addressing the causes of disease not dealing with symptoms so hit for more information

    • Joey K. says:

Thanks Allam for the recommendations. I will definitely be reading up on it. I’m sorry you got hit hard by this. I can’t even begin to imagine. Mines is not that serious but I do know the feeling of first being told I have diabetes. I pray for you and may god bless you and your health.

  17. says:

    JOEY!! You look great!

My wife has Type 1 so it’s an inspiration to see what you’re doing to control diabetes and kick some healthy butt. We do kale shakes and juicing too.

You should maybe think about a program I put my black belt candidates on… to get a black belt at my martial arts studio you have to do 100 consecutive, men’s style pushups. I have kids, women, folks in their sixties… NO ONE gets a black belt without doing 100 pushups but lots make it. Email if you want me to give you the program. Love ya BACK fo’ free Joey… Kurt

    • Joey K. says:

For me it finishes by the fourth day so I wouldn’t know how long after that. I wouldn’t let it go past 5 days before making a new batch. But that’s just me. If you find it’s to much, then just cut everything in have.

I’m currently working on a smaller portion recipe. Maybe for like a cup or 2. Will let you know in the next kale shake post.

  18. Cathie says:

I would like to try this shake. I see that you make a few glasses at once, so I am wondering how long you can keep it in the fridge for before it separates or goes bad?

  19. Chawn Cho says:

    Yo joey,
You should use less fruit in the recipe. All that fruit has too much sugar and might end up leading you to crashing. Keep it green my man.

  20. Mike M says:

Hey, congrats on the weight loss! I also drink a kale(or spinach, swiss chard, or collard green) shake in the morning because of Rogan.

I killed two regular Hamilton Beach blenders before I bought a commercial grade. I tried to win some eBay auctions for used Vitamixs, but no luck. eBay is full of refurbished Blendtecs which were used in Starbucks, but they are too large and I felt uneasy about a refurbished product. I did, however, find a blender that I’m very happy with. It’s called the Blendmax Pro, and you can find it on eBay and Amazon(same seller). It appears to be a very good copy of a Vitamix 5000, but for $150. I’ve used it every day for the last two weeks, and it’s holding up just fine. The difference in the consistency of the shakes it produces compared to a regular blender is night and day. The BP shakes are thin and liquidy, and the same ingredients in the Hamilton Beach came out thick and goopy.

I can’t help thinking the nutrients are better absorbed in a more liquid state. Rogan spoke about high speed blenders “bursting the cell walls” of the plants….

  21. Leticia B. says:

Hi I was curious if you drink the whole thing or can it be stored to keep drinking throuhout the week ? Or does it go bad if its in the fridg for more than a day?

    • Joey K. says:

I drink a glass a day. Usually last me a week. So yes you can leave it there a week in the fridge. Couldn’t tell ya how long before it goes bad cause for me it’s gone by the end of the week.

  22. Vicky T. says:

I just tried your recipe. It’s very good. I’m trying to lose weight so I hope this will help me reach my goal. Thank you

  23. Peter says:

I like this recipe a lot, unfortunately it gave me gas so I had to stop. Anyone else have this? I am pretty sensitive to foods I think.

  24. Jill Flateau says:

Hey…hope your doing well…couldn’t see any dates other than your original start of 2010….are you still using the shake and what is your weight loss now and how is your diabetes?

  25. Gail says:

Hey Joey…..I like kale and kale juices a lot and have mixed it in the blender with other greens, carrot apple and onion.
Tonight I drank kale and orange juice.

  26. LC says:

Greetings Joey…. I am glad that you are on the right track with your health and well being. Just so that you know, Kale and all cruciferous vege’s block an emzyme in the thyroid that can cause goiters (the neck swells all out of porportion from a lack of iodine). If you lightly steam the dark green vege’s then it removes the goiter threat. My Mom had a goiter and she looked like a monster invasion had occurred! Wanted to give a heads up about dark green vege’s, they are good for you but do need to be slightly pre-cooked. Check it out online. I hope you continue to improve and loose weight. I’m going to try your shake.

  27. chris mcdougall says:

    I use….

    2 large kale leaves
    handful of spinach
    1 apple
    1 celery stick
    3 inch cucumber
1.5 cup coconut water ( use only those with under 12 g sugar)
    spoonful of mct oil
dropper of vitamin D in grapeseed oil
    dropper of tumeric by botanicals.
I blend mine in a nutribullet
    Enjoy :-)

    Thanx for all your info
